Pleasantview might be a nice place to live, but it’s become a bit staid. The town needs a DJ to liven up the nightlife, and we think you’re the right person for the job. We’ll get you started with a collection of songs in the rock, pop, rap, R ‘n’ B, dance, country, and world music genres, but make sure you buy additional tunes from your iPod library to bolster your mix skills.

Watch the icons above the Sims’ heads to see which genres they prefer and choose a song that you think will get most of them out on the dance floor. Stop the sliders at just the right spots to create the perfect mix and earn the most cred points from the crowd, as shown by their cumulative happiness and unhappiness scores. Switch to a tune from another genre to get more wallflowers moving and grooving, which earns you additional cred points, but watch the current dancers’ reactions.

Luckily, you have at your disposal DJ talents that help you sway the dancers’ attitudes. For example, you can convince a Sim to like the current music genre and switch them back to their original tastes when the time is right. The Free Drinks, Mirror Ball, and Scratch mini-games let you influence many Sims simultaneously, assuming you have the skills to succeed.

From the Rooftop to Ray’s

Your gigs at the Rooftop Riot, HUB, L.U.R.E., and Ray’s nightclubs feature a variety of goals to achieve, such as getting a certain number of patrons who like different genres of music to dance simultaneously for a set amount of time, while earning a specific amount of cred points. The gigs get increasingly difficult, but early in your career you’ll unlock Freespin mode, which lets you practice your skills in a club that never closes.

Each gig earns you Simoleons that you use to buy better headwear and outfits for your Sim, turning them into the hippest head-turner in Pleasantview. While you’re at the mall, you can buy songs from your iPod library and add them to your next set list, or sell tunes you don’t feel like playing anymore and increase your bank account. (Yes, there’s a reason the shop is called Spore Records.)

So here are 500 Simoleons to get you started. Hit your first club to run through a few tutorials and get the hang of a typical gig. Then launch your career and get Pleasantview’s population on the dance floor.

That DJ Has Skillz…

After you use a talent, its icon dims and a cool down timer, represented by a red bar, ticks down the seconds until you can whip it out again. You’ll need to think ahead if you want your gig to be a success — for example, if you don’t have enough Sims who like a specific genre to meet your goal, convert a Sim to the current style of music, use the Couple Match talent to bring yet another one over to that genre, and then flash the strobe light to keep everyone happy.

Now you’ll be ready to put on a song from another track and start relying on your talents to accomplish another goal. Just watch out for your talents’ negative effects, and note that there’s a delay of several seconds before you can access the talents menu again. And even if your dancing Sims are all grooving to the current tune’s genre, make sure you start spinning a new one as soon as you can, or they’ll get bored and start losing happiness points.
