Skate or Die with Tony Hawk

Says Willick: “School II is actually a conglomerate of several Southern California schools that are frequented by skaters. If you watch skate videos, you’ll recognize several of the areas within the school, like the corridor next to the center quad.”

If you want to create your own skaters or even your own parks, you can do that too. You can customize a new character and then play through a career just as you would with any of the other skaters in the game. The Park Editor has hundreds of pieces to choose from to build unique skating parks, which you can skate in solo or against some friends in one of the four multi-player modes.

Everyone Loves the Manual
There are plenty of other great realistic features in THPS 2, too.

“New tricks were added,” explains Willick, “including lip tricks, such as stalls and inverts, and true nollie tricks.

“The biggest breakthrough, though, is the addition of the manual, or wheelie. This allows you to link your tricks to do nearly endless combinations.”

“The best part of the game is the insane tricks you can put together [with the manual] to get huge scores,” says Rogers. “Every time I think I’ve done the best that anyone can do, someone at the office will beat it by 50 percent.”

“I’ve seen some players pull off sick 2 million point combos,” concurs Willick.

Even Hawk says that the manual feature is his favorite part of the game.

Macs are easy to use.
Top 20 in the Office
And how good is Tony himself at the game?

“Pretty good,” he says, “ but I don’t get the time to master every level. I make sure I finish the game whenever I get a final version — without using cheats — so I at least know where everything is and how to get it.”

That lack of complete mastery of the game by one of the best skaters in the world has to be consoling to gamers like Rogers, who haven’t gotten on a skateboard since they were kids. He says he’s sure he would “rank in the top 20 in the world … or at least in the office.”

It Just Feels Right
Aspyr worked with Westlake Interactive to port the game to the Mac, a process that Rogers says wasn’t easy.

“They did a great job of taking a game that wasn’t really made with multi-platform support in mind and making a program that just feels right on the Mac,” he says.

And, of course, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 will be Carbonized for Mac OS X. Rogers says that Aspyr is “committed to OS X, and all of our future games will support it, either through Carbon or Cocoa.”

Tony Loves Macs
“Finally!” Hawk responded when asked how he felt about his game coming to the Mac. “I’ve been using Macs since 1992 because of their obvious ease of use and their awesome graphics capabilities.”

With a Power Mac G4 and a Power Mac G4 Cube on his desktop and a Titanium PowerBook G4 to take on the road, Hawk is certainly well equipped to play his game.

And how about the future of Tony Hawk games for the Mac?

It looks rad, according to Rogers. “We certainly hope Tony Hawk turns into a successful franchise on the Mac,” he says.

Gear Check
Tony Tony has been using Macs since 1992. He currently owns a Power Mac G4 — loaded with a 20 GB hard drive and 256 MB of RAM and hooked to an Apple Cinema Display, a Que! FireWire CD-RW drive, a UMAX scanner, and a VST 30 GB external FireWire drive — a Power Mac G4 Cube, and a fully loaded Titanium PowerBook G4.

He says that “the G4 with a Super Drive will definitely be my next purchase.”

As for applications, he uses Final Cut Pro to edit his skateboarding videos, iTunes to categorize and play his music, Netscape Communicator to surf the web, Microsoft Word for word processing, Adaptec Toast to burn CDs, and Adobe Photoshop and Quark Xpress for image editing.

The Parks

The Hangar: Located in Mullet Falls, Montana, this old military base is home to a couple decrepit helicopters and planes for your grinding pleasure.

School II: This school is in located in southern California, where many professional skaters got their starts. See if you can find your way into the gym.

Marseille: Ever want to skate around France? Here’s your opportunity.

Skate Street: The ultimate indoor skating park.

Philadelphia: The City of Brotherly Love is home to plenty of skateboarders and features a pretty rough urban jungle of its own.

Bullring: An enormous, unused bullfighting stadium in Mexico. Say, there wouldn’t be any stray bulls wandering around here, would there?

Chopper Drop: This is an enormous half-pipe located in the middle of the ocean not too far from Hawaii (hence the need to drop you in by helicopter).

Skate Heaven: The ultimate skater nirvana, this place is composed of the best parts of many real life locations that skateboarders love.

Looking for cheats or skatethroughs? Planet Tony Hawk has plenty of inside information, like how you can unlock an 80s version of Tony Hawk or even the incredibly agile Spider-Man, who’s not too bad on a board himself. The PC codes will work in the Macintosh version.
