The Sky's the Limit

Destineer By Brad Cook
Peter Tamte is excited about the future. The founder of the newly launched Mac games publisher, Destineer, says that “interactive entertainment is about to get incredibly exciting.”

“Communications companies are spending billions of dollars building data pipes to homes, and we’re going to create exciting new forms of interactive content to run through them. With this broader access, plus the incredible advances in CPUs and graphics chips, we can finally start creating interactive experiences that will interest a much broader range of people in games.”

Tamte should know: He founded Destineer during the summer of 2000, leaving a job as executive vice president of Bungie, the legendary developer of such Mac games as Marathon, Myth, Oni and the upcoming Halo. Before that, he managed worldwide consumer marketing at Apple and founded Mac game publisher MacSoft.

The company has already delivered some top-notch adventures to Mac gamers: the classic strategy game Age of Empires II: Gold and the brand new golf title Links LS 2002 are in stores now, under the Bold by Destineer label, which Tamte established because “we don’t want to confuse people about which games we’ve created and which games we’ve brought to the Mac from another developer.”

“My experience at both Apple and Bungie helped me appreciate the importance of standing out from the crowd,” he says. “Both Apple and Bungie are very good at using technology to create interesting experiences in ways other companies frequently haven’t considered.

“At Destineer, we’re using technology to create fresh, relevant, culturally-interesting experiences.”

Why the name Destineer? “We want you to know that a Destineer game will take you on an adventure in which you will discover something new,” says Tamte.

Expect to see Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 soon; it’s also a game that Tamte is very excited about.

“I’ve wanted to bring Flight Simulator to the Mac for many years,” he says. “Ever after 15-plus years, it’s still the definitive flight sim for any platform.”
