AaronScary Creatures: Clive Barker's Undying

It All Comes Together
Undying begins outside the Covenant mansion, where your first goal is to find Jeremiah so that he can explain your mission. You can talk to various characters here, such as the gardener or the maid. As soon as you find Jeremiah, though, something will interrupt your conversation and throw you into the thick of the action. Like a good movie, Undying grabs you by the throat early and doesn’t let go.

Undying keeps you wanting to play.

“The whole game is wrapped around a tight story,” says Rogers, “so it does pull you in and keep you wanting to play just five more minutes. The enemies, environments, various characters, and the storyline all come together like a good book or movie.”

As the game progresses, you can talk to more characters and learn more about the Covenant family’s past and their connection to the Undying King (check out the sidebar for even more information). The cut scenes that play between levels will give you a sense of where you need to go next and what you need to do, but it will be up to you to figure it all out. You have plenty of weapons and spells at your disposal — so don’t be afraid to use them. (Here’s a tip: use the Scrye spell to see things — like portraits or people — as they really are.)

“The game is very action-oriented,” explains Rogers, “so you’re always busy, but if you take the time to look around the surroundings, which you’re required to do constantly, you’ll notice the little details they’ve included in the game to keep the mood alive.

“Things like broken glass showing your missed shots at the last pack of demons bent on your destruction, or the bloody footprints you leave behind after stepping through a messy battle, all that stuff comes together in this creepy setting that is consistent throughout the game.”

That ends his scaring days.

The Best Games For the Best Platform
Like Alice, another Aspyr horror game, Undying is intended for a mature audience, but that doesn’t mean the company only wants to court gamers who enjoy gory titles.

“We’re focused on one thing: bringing the best gaming experience to the best platform on the planet,” says Rogers. “We concentrate on high-quality games that are fun to play, and we like bringing more choice to the Mac gaming market.

“Diversity is great for the market overall, but it’s critical to Aspyr so that we can reach more people and hopefully expose them to other titles that they’d normally avoid.”

Undying is a great example of that. Just don’t play it with the lights off.

A Living Person's Guide to Undying

Since Clive Barker is a pretty creative guy, there’s quite a bit of backstory to this game. While we’ll let you discover the most shocking parts of it, here’s a basic overview of the characters and places.

Characters

lizabeth   Lizbeth: The youngest Covenant, she enjoyed reading poetry and attending the opera. She also had more than her share of suitors. Now she’s not too happy that her beauty was taken from her at such a young age.

Aaron   Aaron: He was an artist who enjoyed gambling as much as he enjoyed painting gruesome battlefield scenes. Was he trying to hint at the awful battle that would consume the Covenants?

Bethany   Bethany: Aaron’s twin sister, she had a penchant for horticulture. Some said she could revive the most lifeless plant. Now they say she uses her powers for something worse.

Ambrose   Ambrose: He left the family early and traveled the world. Now he’s back to settle old business.

Jeremiah   Jeremiah: The oldest Covenant sibling, he actually set this whole mess in motion when he discovered an ancient text.

Patrick   Patrick Galloway: He served under Jeremiah in the muddy trenches of World War I and protected his commander when Jeremiah was injured.

Keisinger   Keisinger: A practitioner of black magic, he’s crossed paths with Patrick before.

Places

Monastery: Now in ruins, this ancient structure was built long ago by monks of the Order of St. George in an attempt to preserve the Standing Stones. What that has to do with Patrick’s mission is your job to find out.

Covenant Manor: The Covenant family home was built in 1691. So many horrific things have happened since then that many say the building has taken on a life of its own.

Eternal Autumn: A bleak landscape full of smoldering fires. Does it exist in our world or another one?

Pirate’s Cove: Some members of the Covenant family once used the cove for their illegal trading activities. Now the sinister Trsanti use the secluded area for their own purposes.

Oneiros: A mystical city of lost souls. A nightmare landscape with a blood red sky and almost inaccessible places. The location of your toughest test.

In addition to the places listed above, there are secret areas of Undying. You’ll have to poke around to find them all, but we’ll give you an easy one to start you off: After you talk to the maid at the beginning of the game, walk toward the end of the hall, where a health pack lies near a door. Look for two square panels near the top of the door and shoot them; the door will open, and you’ll find something cool inside.
