An Earthling’s Guide to Red Faction

Weapons
There are 15 weapons you can use against Ultor’s forces in the game:

UCB-24 Ultor Control Baton UCB-24 Ultor Control Baton: The first weapon you find, the control baton is only useful as a club or a tazer at close range.
URC-15 Ultor Remote Mining Charge URC-15 Ultor Remote Mining Charge: Place remote charges anywhere you need a good explosion and detonate them from afar.
USP-16 Ultor Semi-Automatic Pistol USP-16 Ultor Semi-Automatic Pistol: The pistol comes with a silencer that comes in handy when you don’t want to alert anyone to your presence.
UHG-90 Ultor Offensive Hand Grenade UHG-90 Ultor Offensive Hand Grenade: These can explode on impact or after a brief amount of time. They’re useful for doing damage to a limited area.
UBS-4 Ultor Riot Body Shield UBS-4 Ultor Riot Body Shield: The guards use these to defend themselves from unruly crowds, and you can use them for self-defense, too.
UAS-10 Ultor Automatic Combat Shotgun UAS-10 Ultor Automatic Combat Shotgun: This weapon is lethal at close range. You can set it to fire two rounds in one burst or fire rounds continuously, although the eight shots in each clip mean that you’ll have to reload a lot.
UAP-32/20 Ultor Submachine Gun UAP-32/20 Ultor Submachine Gun: Need some armor-piercing bullets? You’ll get those here.
JF60-HMG/BF Heavy Suppression Machine Gun JF60-HMG/BF Heavy Suppression Machine Gun: This is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, but it’s also less accurate than the other weapons.
UAR-42 Ultor Military Assault Rifle UAR-42 Ultor Military Assault Rifle: The assault rifle holds a lot of rounds in each clip and can be set for continuous fire.
UFT-1 Ultor Flamethrower UFT-1 Ultor Flamethrower: You can use this to shoot out bursts of liquid flame or detach the fuel canister and turn it into a bomb.
USG-50 Ultor Sniper Rifle USG-50 Ultor Sniper Rifle: The best long-range weapon.
MKISG-1 Defender Precision Rifle MKISG-1 Defender Precision Rifle: This gun combines the long-range precision of the sniper rifle with the lethal impact of the submachine gun.
FCA-26 Magnetic Rail Driver FCA-26 Magnetic Rail Driver: The rail driver holds only one round in its chamber, and you can only carry 10 of them at a time. This weapon is devastatingly powerful. It comes with a scope that allows you to see the bad guys through walls.
URL-6T Ultor Tactical Rocket Launcher URL-6T Ultor Tactical Rocket Launcher: Lock on to the enemy and fire “dumb” rockets — they’ll simply explode where they land — or heat-seeking missiles.
F-1TL Fusion Rocket Launcher F-1TL Fusion Rocket Launcher: Unlike the tactical rocket launcher, which carries six rounds, the fusion rocket launcher holds only one, but it does an enormous amount of damage. Ammunition is hard to come by, though, so make it count when you use it.

Vehicles
All five vehicles have their own weapons and defense systems:

Drill machine: You can use the driller to run over the guards or even short out electric fields.

Submarine: The sub will take you through Mars’ underwater caverns and into a top secret Ultor lab.

Fighter: Sporting two kinds of weapons, the fighter will help you access an Ultor base.

Jeep: This vehicle will get you around the cavernous area of Capek’s “zoo.”

Armored personnel carrier (APC): Need a quick route to the spaceport where you can catch a shuttle off the planet’s surface? Try using the APC.

Characters: Friend or Foe?
Eos: You’ll meet her at the end of the first level, via a message that announces the beginning of the revolution. She is the leader of the rebels.

Hendrix: He may be a nerdy security technician working for Ultor, but he’s also an invaluable source of information, and he has no loyalty to his employer.

Gryphon: This Ultor administrator knows a few things about the mysterious plague.

Capek: An Ultor employee who knows how to cure the plague. He’s been conducting some gruesome experiments.

Colonel Masako: She controls the nasty mercenaries who are called in to help Ultor’s guards deal with the revolution.

Game Tips and Tricks
If you decide to play Red Faction solo, you’ll find that Parker is the kind of guy who’s reluctant to get involved until he sees an act of injustice and heeds the call to action. The game begins as he witnesses an argument between a miner and an Ultor guard that turns violent.

In the fight that ensues, the guard loses his control baton. Make sure to pick up the baton, you’ll need to use it to defend yourself and save the miner.

At that point you are inexorably drawn into the revolution, since nearby guards will see your actions and attack you. Grab the fallen guard’s 12 mm pistol as your next weapon, and soon you’re on the run through the first level.

Other items that will help you through this and subsequent levels are the remote charges you’ll find and collect along the way. These explosives can be used to damage and make openings (escape routes) in walls, floors, and ceilings. In the first level, the spots where you can use the charges (thanks to Geo Mod) are marked with big yellow X’s.

As you move through the game, make sure you grab the power-up and health bonuses that you’ll find hidden throughout each level. The former will enhance your defenses while the latter will restore health lost if you become injured.
