Gameplay Tips

When you enter corners on a race course, your vehicle will slide a bit. If you slide too much, though, you’ll lose speed as well as precious seconds. To adjust how much your vehicle slides when you turn the steering wheel, go into the Handling Balance setting and set it as close to oversteer as you can.

You’ll also lose acceleration when a tire or two leaves the ground while you’re going through a corner. Keep all four tires on the ground at all times, unless, of course, you’re leaping off a hill, in which case you’re probably taking a shortcut that will save you some time.

And if you’re in a corner and it’s tighter than you realize, remember that the handbrake is your best friend in such situations. It can get you out of a tight spot when the brake pedal can’t.

If you’ve ever driven around San Francisco or any hilly area, you probably know this trick: shift into low gear for better traction when climbing a slope. If that doesn’t work, four-wheel-drive low mode will do the trick.

Four-wheel-drive low mode is also useful if you want a quick burst of speed off the starting line, but don’t forget to switch into high mode when you reach your highest gear.

Some of the courses feature plenty of rain or even ice and snow, which means you may find your tires spinning a lot. If that happens, stay off the gas pedal and don’t be such a lead foot.

When playing the career missions, make sure you purchase a winch as well as the largest tires possible. The former will help you when you get stuck, and the latter will help your vehicle climb over large obstacles.
