Max Payne: A Rock-Solid Hero For a Rock-Solid OS

The Armory

Weapons in the Game

Lead Pipe/Baseball Bat:
These weapons aren’t very useful against your enemies, who will be able to fire multiple shots at you before you can get close enough to whack them. If you’re out of ammo, though, they’re good for sneaking up on bad guys from behind, and they come in handy for breaking open boxes and crates, which often contain extra supplies, without wasting bullets.

Beretta/Dual Berettas:
The Beretta is the first firearm Max uses in the game. If he finds another, he can use dual Berettas, which double his firepower. If you’re going to waste ammo on crates and boxes or other non-enemy shooting, waste Beretta ammo.

Desert Eagle:
This handgun is a little more powerful and accurate than the Beretta, but you can’t carry many of its clips at any given time.

Pump-Action Shotgun/Sawed-off Shotgun:
Both of the shotguns in the game offer exceptional power at close range but are useless from a distance. The pump-action version holds seven shells at a time while the sawed-off model holds two. You’ll only get off one blast when you use a shotgun during bullet time, but its punch will floor most bad guys.

Jackhammer:
This gun offers the power of the shotguns and the higher rate of fire of the other weapons.

Ingram/Dual Ingrams:
The Ingram delivers powerful shots and a very high rate of fire, but be careful or you’ll use your ammo too quickly. Grab another one for some dual-pistol action.

Colt Commando:
Many of the bad guys you’ll encounter in the later levels of the game carry this gun, which makes it a smart choice for you since extra ammo will be plentiful. It’s a solid all-around gun with high power, accuracy, and rate of fire.

Sniper Rifle:
This is the best weapon to use against bad guys who aren’t within range of a handgun or shotgun. You won’t find much ammunition for this rifle scattered throughout the game, though.

M79 Grenade Launcher:
Like the sniper rifle, this is a long-range weapon, but it’s much more powerful: it fires grenades that explode on contact. Unfortunately, ammunition for the grenade launcher is even scarcer than it is for the sniper rifle, so save this one for the right moments.

Grenades and Molotov Cocktails:
These weapons are perfect for tossing around a corner when you hear some guards patrolling nearby. They’re also good for tossing over obstacles when you know bad guys are hidden behind them.

Cheat Codes

Stumped? Then you may need some help, thanks to the cheat codes that are commonly placed in most videogames. They allow you to, well, cheat and change the rules. This sometimes includes activating bonuses, unlocking secrets and new levels of gameplay.

To activate the cheats in Max Payne, hold down the Option and “D” keys on your keyboard and launch the game. You’ll hear a beep if you did it correctly.

In the game configuration dialog box, click the picture of Max and you’ll see a developer settings dialog box. Click the boxes next to “Developer Mode” and “Developer Keys” and head into the game.

While you’re playing, press the “F12” key, which will bring up a console. Simply enter a code and press “Return” to activate it. You can enter as many codes as you wish.

Some other notable functions made available in these developer modes are a framerate counter (press “F11” when using “showfps”) and a floating camera (press “c”).
