Tom Clancy’s Bio

A naval history buff, Clancy was once an insurance broker with an English degree. He longed to be a novelist, and when he got his chance, he broke through in a big way. Aided by an endorsement from President Ronald Reagan, his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, landed on the New York Times bestseller list in 1984. The book introduced hero Jack Ryan and allowed Clancy to carve out a literary sub-genre that some have dubbed “the techno-thriller.”

His next novel, Red Storm Rising, didn’t feature Ryan, but his hero did appear in eight more novels, including 1991’s The Sum of All Fears, which hit the silver screen this past summer with Ben Affleck playing the lead. (Alec Baldwin played Ryan in Hunt for Red October and Harrison Ford took on the role in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.)

Clancy’s latest novel is Red Rabbit, which appeared in August 2002. Four of his novels have been turned into movies.

If you’re interested in playing more games set in the “Clancyverse,” MacSoft publishes Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear.

Tips and Tricks

  • When enhancing your team members’ skills, try to concentrate on one skill per teammate and build them up in an area that makes sense. That is, enhance snipers’ stealth, riflemen’s leadership, support soldiers’ weapons, demo soldiers’ endurance, and so forth.

  • Place snipers in their own group and use them to move ahead of the team and scout out the enemy. They can also take out as many enemy soldiers from long range as possible.

  • Don’t waste ammo; make every shot count. When the coast is clear, reload your weapons.

  • You can select from different kits for each soldier (some can have grenades or binoculars with their guns, for example). Keep that in mind and choose the kits that will fit the mission. For example, if you’re going to encounter some tanks, equip your demolitions experts with anti-tank rockets for their secondary weapons.

  • Save as often as possible during each mission. The bad guys have a tendency of popping up when you least expect it, and it usually only takes one or two shots to eliminate one of your soldiers. If you save after each enemy encounter, you’ll be able to replay the next one armed with the knowledge of what’s about to occur.

  • Keep your team members crouched as often as possible. While they won’t move as fast as they would if they were standing straight, a crouched position makes them much harder to hit. Keep your snipers flat on the ground when they scout the enemy.

  • Use the command map (press the left shift key to bring it up) as often as possible. Sometimes the bad guys, who are represented as red diamonds, will show up on it before you can see them, which will help you eliminate them before they spot you.

  • Use the A and D keys to peek around corners. This will expose much less of your character’s body while still being able to see the enemy. Remember, it only takes a shot or two to take out a bad guy.

  • You can press the V key to use your nightvision goggles. You’ll find that they will help you spot the enemy better during the daytime too.

  • And here are a couple tips straight from the team that created the game:

  • “Never go around a corner without putting a grenade there first,” says Dansky, “and remember that standing on a ridgeline is extremely bad for your long-term career prospects.”

  • “Don’t forget to have someone always cover for you when you move,” adds Stelmack, “and always cover other people when they’re moving.”
