The Legend Returns to the Mac: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

A Tony Hawk Primer

The Skaters

Not only is it fun to skate as your favorite pro, but each has different strengths that come in handy depending on the objectives in each level. For example, each skate park has the letters S, K, A, T, and E hidden somewhere; you’ll need a skater with strong air skills (known as a “vert skater”) to grab letters hidden in high spots and a skater with strong ground skills (known as a “street skater”) to pick up the ones tucked away in low areas.

To unlock the hidden characters, you’ll need to complete certain tasks in different parks. If you can’t wait to use them, see the cheats section to access all of them. Watch the reaction of the guy tending the counter at the skate shop as you cycle through the bonus skaters, especially when you access The Demoness and Darth Maul.

two skaters

Tony Hawk:
Tony Tony turned pro at the age of 14 and is widely credited as the guy who brought skateboarding into the mainstream. He has invented more than 80 tricks — including the almost impossible 900, which existed only in theory until he pulled it off in 1999 — and boasts legions of fans around the world. His strengths as a vert skater are his ability to leap high in the air and spin quickly.
  Steve Caballero:
Steve This all-around street skater is an old-timer who has been pulling off incredible stunts since the 70s. In fact, he’s known as “The Godfather of Skateboarding.” He has long hangtime when he’s airborne, and his balance on a rail is strong.

Kareen Campbell:
Kareen Kareem is what’s known as a street skater, the kind of guy who grew up winding his way through dense city streets on a skateboard. He was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. He’s good at spinning and catching some air when leaping off a ramp.
  Rune Glifberg
Rune Hailing from Copenhagen, Rune has experience skating in a variety of parks. Since he’s a “vert skater,” his strong suit is pulling off tricks while airborne.

Eric Koston
Eric Eric is a young skater from Bangkok, but he’s already well-known to many in the sport. As a street skater, he’s great at sliding down rails and pulling off manuals (where a skater balances on one end of his board and twirls).
  Bucky Lasek
Bucky Who wouldn’t love to have Tony Hawk as a mentor? Bucky can count himself among that select group. He’s another vert skater with strong skills while airborne.

Bam Margera:
Bam Bam is the class clown of the professional skateboarding world. He’s a street skater with strong rail-sliding skills.
  Rodney Mullen
Rodney One of the best street skateboarders in the world, Rodney pioneered many of the moves favored by today’s young skaters. His manual and spin skills are unparalleled.

Chad Muska
Chad Another street skater, Chad can pull off ollies and rail slides with ease.
  Andrew Reynolds
Andrew Andrew’s tall — 6’1 2” — and gifted with strong street skater skills. He’s known as the kind of guy who doesn’t mind throwing himself down a huge flight of stairs, riding the rail the whole way.

Geoff Rowley
Geoff Geoff, a native of Liverpool, England, proves that skateboarding is popular across the pond too. He’s a street skater who happens to possess some solid air skills too.
  Elissa Steamer
Elissa Elissa is the first woman to make a name for herself in what is still a male-dominated sport. She’s known as a street skater, but she has middle-of-the-road skills in all areas.

Jamie Thomas:
Jamie Like Tony Hawk, Jamie has edited several skateboarding videos. He’s a street skater whose strength lies in balancing himself on a tricky rail.

Hidden Characters

Darth Maul
Darth Darth Maul: You just thought he was cut in half at the end of The Phantom Menace. Maul comes equipped with his double-ended lightsaber and a floating skateboard. As you might expect, he’s a vert skater with a serious Sith Saber Spin special move.
  Wolverine
Wolverine This favorite from the pages of Marvel Comics’ X-Men is a fast street skater, bub. Two of his special moves utilize those shiny adamantium claws that stick out of his hands.

Officer Dick
Officer He’s a goofy street skater with average skills in all areas. See if you can pull off his Sobriety Grind.
  Private Carrera
Private Yeah, she’s a cute skater with strong street skills. But watch her pull off the Handspring Layout.

Ollie the Magic Bum
Bum Despite that always-present bottle of alcohol in one hand, Ollie is a good street skater whose forte is — you guessed it — the ollie.
  Kelly Slater
Kelly He’s considered a street skater, but he has serious air and hangtime skills. That’s not a surprise when you realize that he’s a professional surfer with a long surfboard beneath his feet.

Demoness
Demoness She’s all-powerful in all areas. What, you’re going to tell her she’s not good enough?
  Neversoft Eyeball
Neversoft Neversoft’s mascot is terrible in all skills, but it’s always amusing to watch a body with an eyeball for a head wipe out while trying to pull off a one-foot japan.

The Levels

The Foundry: Whatever they do here, it requires pouring lots of molten metal into a vat. Don’t fall in. There are plenty of rails in this level for your grinding pleasure; add in manuals between the grinds for even more points.

Canada: This wintry wonderland features many ramps as well as five skaters who are waiting for you to impress them with cool tricks. This is also the level where you can bury the bully with a pile of snow.

Rio: This level is a skate park surrounded by a few busy city streets. In Career mode, it hosts a skate competition in which you get three one-minute runs to show off your best moves.

Suburbia: Ah, the land of lawn gnomes and strip malls, a place where many of today’s professional skaters got their starts jumping off homemade ramps in the street until someone mother told them to stop. There are a few interesting tasks in this level, including one in which you must restore power to someone’s satellite dish. If that isn’t the epitome of suburbia, we don’t know what is.

Airport: Watch out for those baggage carts; they hurt if you run into them. There are plenty of rails to grind and ramps to jump off around here, as well as five pickpockets who you can run over to stop them.

Skater Island: The ultimate skate park, this level also features a skate competition in Career mode.

Los Angeles: Ah, the land of — Never mind. This level offers plenty of ramps to jump off as well as some buildings you can enter. Watch out for the earthquake and the police chase.

Cruise Ship: There are plenty of ramps and railings in this level, as well as several bikini-clad women who are impressed by cool skaters (yes, even the female ones). Be careful or you’ll fall overboard.

Tokyo: This brightly-lit level features the last skate competition — as well as the last level — in Career mode. The bowls in the back of the level offer your best bet for high scores.

Warehouse: These last three levels are available in Free Skate or Single Session, if you’re able to unlock them. The Warehouse offers several big ramps as well as a secret room above the half-pipe.

Burnside: This is a skate park in the middle of an urban area. It features plenty of pools whose edges you can grind and use to launch high in the air for tricks.

Roswell: A combination skate park/military base. Can you free the UFO?
