Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003

Tee Off With Tiger Woods

By Brad Cook
Ah, springtime, when the thoughts of many turn to romance, cleaning out the house and hitting the links. If the first two are interfering with your ability to fulfill the third, grab a copy of Aspyr Media’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003. With 12 PGA Tour courses and 15 pro golfers to choose from — including Tiger himself, of course — this game will allow you to live out your fantasy of teeing off at Pebble Beach with the wind at your back, a gentle sunrise on the horizon and an adoring gallery cheering you on.

While many golf titles do a serviceable job of immersing you in the game, the developers at EA Sports really went all-out in their quest to faithfully recreate the sport on your Mac. Birds chirp in the distance as you prepare to hit the ball. Trees sway in a gentle breeze while your drive flies high over the fairway. A plume of sand appears when your ball lands in a trap. The people in the gallery clap and cheer as your next stroke places the ball on the green. And Tiger performs his signature fist pump after knocking a long putt right into the hole.

In addition to embarking on a full PGA tour with the pro of your choice, you can select from 14 types of golf games. For example, match play pits you against another golfer — controlled by either the computer or a friend — and awards one point to the player who finishes each hole with the fewest strokes. The winner is the player with the most points after 18 holes (you can also play 1 hole, 3 holes, or the front or back 9 on each course). Or you could try a shootout, in which up to 8 players battle through 7 holes of golf. The one with the worst score at each hole is eliminated and the last 2 golfers vie for the win at the final hole.

Your Career as a Golfer
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 also allows you to create your own golfer in career mode and put him or her through the paces. You can take lessons to improve your game, compete in various money-paying events, and take time off to hit the practice range. Other golfers will challenge you to a variety of skills competitions that pay out cash to the winner. You use your money to buy better clubs, pay entry fees for events, and improve your golfer’s skill ratings as you work your way from amateur to master.

A calendar shows you the events for each month. You choose which ones to play through the end of the current year, keeping in mind that they get tougher as you get closer to December. Once you complete every event for the year, you move on and face increasingly better opponents, as well as tougher competitions. As your career progresses you can view your trophy case from time to time and admire the hardware you’ve won.

So whether you want to vicariously live the golfer’s life through your favorite pro or try to make a name for yourself as a top-notch player, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003, even if you have no prior experience with the sport.

The Courses

on the green Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Located in Orlando, FL, Arnold Palmer’s country club has been part of the PGA Tour since 1979. Its championship course stretches 7,206 yards.

Colonial Country Club: John Bredemus designed this club’s course in 1933. You’ll find it in Fort Worth, TX.

Pebble Beach: Amateur golfers Jack Neville and Douglas Grant designed this famous course in 1919. It’s located along the northern California coast, where it hosts a variety of events in addition to the PGA Tour, including the well-known AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Celebrities team up with professional golfers and have fun during that tournament.

Poppy Hills Golf Course: This tree-lined course was designed in 1986 by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It features large greens, most of which are encircled by sand and water traps, as well as breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Prince Course at Princeville: Also designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., this Hawaiian course sits along Kauai’s spectacular north shore.

Royal Birkdale Golf Club: This UK course has a rich history that dates back to 1889, when the club was founded by nine men. The course was redesigned in the 1930s, updated in 1961, and redesigned again between 1991 and 1992. It’s considered one of the premiere British courses.

Sahalee Country Club: The Chinook Indian name Sahalee means “high heavenly ground.” This club, located in Sammamish, WA, certainly lives up to the name with large stands of cedar and fir trees that surround the course.

Spyglass Hill Golf Course: These links opened at Pebble Beach in 1966, after Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed one of the most difficult golf courses in the world. Spyglass also hosts the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and has seen its share of Bill Murray’s legendary antics on the fairway (he participates in almost every Pro-Am and usually puts on a unique comedy routine for the fans).

St. Andrews Golf Links: They call the course here in Scotland The Old Course, and many consider it the birthplace of modern golf. Its design features many natural elements.

TPC at Sawgrass: The Stadium Course here in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, is the permanent home of The PLAYERS Championship. It opened in 1981 and serves as the home club of the PGA Tour. Many know it best for the island green on the 17th hole.

TPC at Scottsdale: This desert-locked course in Scottsdale, AZ was designed in 1986 by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, two premiere golf course designers. More than 500,000 fans come here each year to see the Phoenix Open, which is the largest spectator event on the PGA Tour.

Torrey Pines South Course: Pine trees line the fairways at this course in San Diego, CA. It was designed in the early 1950s by William “Billy” Bell and it’s one of the most popular municipal golf courses in the US.

Skill Zone: This practice range, which is new to the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, features 18 different target greens, distance markers, and plenty of traps. It offers a serious challenge to any golfer, regardless of their skill level.
