Get a Charge Out of Worms Blast

By Brad Cook
The best games take tried-and-true gameplay and offer a unique twist on an old formula. That’s certainly true of Feral Interactive’s Worms Blast.

This title takes the basic mechanics of such classic puzzle games as Tetris and adds 9 characters for you to choose from, 60 missions, 8 head-to-head modes against a human or computer opponent, and more than 20 weapons, utilities, and gadgets.

The Goal
The object of Worms Blast is to fire randomly colored ammunition from a bazooka at a series of colored blocks at the top of the screen. If the color of the ammunition matches the color of the block it strikes, then the block vanishes along with all connecting blocks of the same color. If the colors don’t match, though, the block takes on the same hue as the ammunition, along with all the blocks immediately surrounding it.

It sounds simple, but there are many variations on this basic gameplay model that keep you on your toes. During some levels, for example, you might not want to destroy any blocks at all because of the objective involved. When you reach other levels, you may be required to destroy only certain-colored blocks.

There are two ways to play Worms Blast solo: puzzle and tournament. In the former, you travel around a map with the goal of reaching a volcanic island in the center. In the latter, you run through a series of levels and try to attain the highest score possible.

Taking On All Comers
Head-to-head play introduces even more strategy to the gameplay because it offers the opportunity to affect your opponent. For example, there’s a barrier between the players that opens for brief periods, allowing you the opportunity to fire ammunition at your adversary or his blocks. If the ammunition is a different color than the blocks, the blocks turn to stone and your opponent can’t eliminate them from play.

You can also grab power-ups in head-to-head mode that offer you advanced weapons such as grenades and dynamite (these are also available in the single-player games). Computer-controlled opponents are usually just as tough as any human ones you can find, so watch out. Some are stronger than others, though, so read on to learn who’s who in Worms Blast.
