Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3

Raven Shield: Success is in the Details

By Brad Cook
You wiped out the alien Covenant army menacing humanity in Halo: Combat Evolved. You laughed while saving the world in No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.’s Way. You sought out new life forms and fired your phaser at them in Star Trek: Elite Force 2.

None of that will prepare you for Aspyr Media’s tactical, squad-based first-person shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Charge blindly into a room during a mission and you won’t last long. Fail to carefully plan your strategy before a mission and we guarantee you will meet disaster. And don’t bother to look for health packs if you get shot because you won’t find any, which is just as well since one bullet is often enough to incapacitate or kill.

Look Before You Leap
While Raven Shield allows you to see the action through a character’s eyes as you carry out the 15 missions in the game, as any first-person shooter does, it requires more planning than most FPS titles. You select up to eight operatives, who all sport specific specialties, and break them into no more than three teams. Equip them with your choice of 57 weapons, gear such as night vision goggles or explosives and body armor (heavier is better, but it also slows them down). Then decide your strategy.

Raven ShieldIn the mission planning screen, you examine a map and determine how to execute your mission. You might want your teams to fire at will or you might decide it would be better for them to fire only if shot at, depending on the circumstances. You can also set waypoints where your operatives will stop and wait for further orders from you or perform a specific action, such as toss grenades in a room.

During each mission, you move between the teams and take control of different characters, or you can choose to be an omniscient observer and tell the teams what to do while the computer executes the action. If you’d prefer to skip the preparation stage, you can always load a plan created by the game’s designers, but it may not fit your particular style.

Raven Shield’s missions take you around the world as you try to figure out why the employees at a Croatian bank were killed. They had discovered documents that proved the Nazis were shipping ill-gotten gold out of the country as World War II came to an end, but it’s clear that something else is going on. Even though the documents were burned, Rainbow believes there is more evidence to be found, if you can stay one step ahead of the bad guys.

Put Your ISP Account to Good Use
Like other first-person shooters, Raven Shield also offers plenty of multi-player action, both adversarial and cooperative, via GameRanger. On the adversarial side, take on other players in the usual solo and team-based deathmatches or try to complete an objective, such as moving hostages to a safe zone while the other team tries to stop you.

If you’d prefer to cooperate with your fellow gamers, you can team up with them against computer-controlled tangos in a variety of missions, as well as the usual kill-or-be-killed modes. When you set up a multi-player server, you can tweak such settings as which weapons can be used or the time limit per round.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a penthouse to sneak into.

Tips and Tricks

shots fired   In the Shattered Glass mission, create a second team with just one operative (it doesn’t matter what weapons you give him) and leave him on the roof. When the operative in the first team (who you will control) achieves his objectives inside the penthouse, move the second operative to the extraction zone. Because it doesn’t matter which operative reaches the extraction zone, you can leave the first one where he is and still complete the mission.

When you play the Shattered Glass mission, make sure you close the door behind you every time you enter a room. If you leave it open and a guard sees it, he will come to investigate. Even if you shoot him, the mission will still end unsuccessfully because he saw you.

If you turn on auto aim, your weapon’s crosshairs will automatically jump onto any bad guys who enter your view. This is a useful way to pick up someone’s presence when you enter a cluttered room (hopefully before he sees you), and it also comes in handy during the Shattered Glass mission since you need to avoid detection.

Don’t put a sniper in a team by himself, even if you’re going to leave him in the perfect sniping spot for the entire mission. Why? Because someone has to watch his back. Remember, many of the terrorists will move around, so one of them may come upon your sniper from behind.

team   When playing missions in which terrorists have taken hostages, try assigning one team silenced weapons and have them do the rescuing while the other teams take out the perimeter guards. Terrorists will usually kill their hostages if they see or hear you nearby, so silenced weapons won’t alert them to your presence. The other teams, however, may want regular weapons because gunfire will usually bring more guards running, and it’s better to take a group of them out in one spot than sneak around and try to find all of them. Just make sure your other teams don’t get too close to the hostages.

When you encounter a room with two or more entrances, try to move one team through each door simultaneously. If there are any terrorists inside, they’ll take a moment to figure out who to shoot at first, which is your opportunity to take them out.

Night vision scopes and goggles are useless when trying to see through smoke, but thermal scopes and goggles are perfect, since the smoke doesn’t give off heat. Sometimes it may be useful to toss a smoke grenade or two into a large room and send in an operative equipped with either thermal goggles or a thermal sniper scope. While the terrorists try to peer through the smoke, you’ll be able to see them without any problems.

Finally, don’t forget that you can harm other Rainbow operatives if you shoot them, so make sure you keep track of your teams at all times. There’s nothing worse than opening a door and shooting the person behind it, only to discover he wasn’t a tango. (You can accidentally kill hostages too, so keep them in a safe place until you’ve secured the area.)

Cheat If You Must

Stumped? Then you may need some help, thanks to the cheat codes that are commonly placed in most videogames. They allow you to, well, cheat and change the rules. This sometimes includes activating bonuses, unlocking secrets and new levels of gameplay.

To enable cheats in Raven Shield, press the “Y” (talk) key and erase the word “Say” from the box that appears. Enter a code exactly as it appears below, including any spaces, and press “Return.” Repeat the process to enable more cheats.
