In addition to the usual deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag game types, Call of Duty 2 offers headquarters and search and destroy modes. The former splits players into two teams, with one attacking a headquarters and the other defending it. At the end of the round, the teams switch, with the winner being the one that held its headquarters the longest. The latter also creates two teams, with one tasked with destroying one of two targets and the other ordered to stop that from happening.

• Keep moving, and try to zig-zag in open areas to throw off snipers taking aim at you. If you’re the one doing the sniping, realize that other players will likely head for your position once they respawn. Some servers are equipped with a kill cam, which means you can watch your death from the point-of-view of the player who fragged you. Obviously, other players can do the same when you kill them.
• Watch the grenade indicator, and get the heck out of the area if you see it show up. Sometimes you won’t see the indicator, so watch for grenade-shaped objects landing in your vicinity, or listen for their telltale clinking sound as they land nearby. The Americans and British use the traditional football-shaped grenades, while the Germans and Russians have those “potato masher” grenades with the handle.
• Sound is your friend. If you have a good set of speakers hooked up to your Mac, you’ll be able to hear sounds in front of, behind, and next to you. You can also tell when shooting is far away or nearby.
• Of course, always keep your eyes peeled too. Watch for the slightest movement, especially among trees and other areas of cover. You’ll know if you have your sights trained on another player because your crosshairs will turn red.
• When you come across two or more players shooting at each other, take advantage of the fact that they likely don’t know you’re there. Toss a grenade in their midst, or concentrate your fire on the one who looks like he’s taking the worst of it. Then turn on the others when he’s eliminated.
• Those stationary guns are good for when you need to mow down your opponents, but watch out for other players coming up on you from behind — as well as snipers ready to take you out. Your best strategy here is to control the gun for a few seconds, then quickly scan your surroundings. Then drop it — whether you’ve eliminated anyone or not, and check for sneak attacks from the rear. Repeat as needed.
• Jumping and moving back and forth will make you harder to hit, but make sure you’ve practiced your aim, or you won’t be able to hit anyone either. Try crouching, or even going prone, to throw off opponents expecting your head and torso to be at a certain height. Just remember that you move slower when crouched, and you will slide along at a snail’s pace when prone. But they’re good ways to reduce the size of the target you’re presenting to others.
• If you think you have the advantage over another player, use your second mouse button to aim down your weapon’s sight, or switch to your scope, if you have a sniper rifle. Lining up your target that way will let you dispatch him with a minimal number of bullets. You can also fire your sniper rifle without looking down your scope. You won’t be as accurate, but you’ll have freedom of movement.
• Remember to grab extra grenades and ammo from the bodies of fallen players. You can also press the F key to swap your current weapon for theirs, if you think something different will be better or you’re out of ammo. (You’ll only collect ammo if the dead player was carrying the same type of weapon as yours.)
• As in the single-player game, you need to find a safe spot when blood covers the edges of your display and you hear labored breathing. Give yourself a few seconds to get back to normal and then head into the fray once more.
• Finally, it may be tempting to spawn camp, but that’s no fun for anyone. Spawn camping is the act of hanging out where you know other players will respawn, ready to blast them as soon as they appear. Sure, you can rack up easy kills that way, but the others playing against you won’t appreciate it.

To enable cheats in Call of Duty 2, select the System menu and then go into the game options found under Options. Next to Enable Console, click “No” to turn it into “Yes.” Then press the Tilde (~) key to bring up the console at the top of the screen. Type “developer 1” (without the quotes) and press the Return key. This will enable you to enter the cheats shown below.

To see previously activated cheats from the console, press the up and down arrow keys. That’s a helpful trick for cheats that are similar and just need one or two characters modified, such as the ones that unlock the mission sets.

Things That Go Boom. You even get the chance to drive a tank during one explosive mission.

By the Whites of Their Eyes. Watch for German troops coming out of the camouflaging smoke.

Tunnel of Doom. Improved AI means your fellow soldiers will take cover and advance with caution.

In Your Sights. You’ll get to use a variety of authentic World War II weapons during the game.
