Sadly, Makuta’s arrival means that many of the creatures inhabiting our island have fallen under the control of his dark elemental energy. The normally benign Rahi, who take many forms, have become aggressive — use your light elemental energy to cleanse their inner beings and free them of Makuta’s influence. You must also contend with the Bohrok, insect-like creatures driven to free their twin queens, known as Bahrag; the Bohrok were dormant for centuries before Makuta’s arrival awoke them.

It’s a Dry Heat. Toa Tahu negotiates the volcanic terrain.

As you travel through the island’s six regions, known as Wahi, I implore you to rescue any Matoran villagers you find. They fled the Bohrok swarms and now find themselves lost. I’m sure they will repay your kindness by using freed Rahi to build new ones friendly to your cause. Some of them may even accompany you on your journey and help in whatever way they can.

And Six Did Come

Our prophecies foretold that six heroes, called the Toa, would arrive on our island to save us from Makuta. Lo and behold, six canisters washed ashore shortly before you arrived. They held our Toa heroes: Tahu, Kopaka, Lewa, Gali, Pohatu and Onua. Each holds dominion over one of Matu Nui’s Wahi, and each possesses special powers that will help you in your quest.

Bionicle Sense is Tingling. Yeah, that boss looks pretty nasty, but watch out for the creature on the right.

I have prepared a supplement that explains each of the Toa’s abilities in greater detail — you would do well to study it at length before embarking on your journey. While Tahu and Kopaka possess ample skill, our only hope of defeating Makuta’s strongest minions lies in the power of Toa Nuva, whose secrets even I cannot fully understand. Once you unlock it, the other four Toa will become available to you; I sense that Makuta underestimates their powers, which will give you the advantage.

To finally drive Makuta himself from Mata Nui, however, you must find the Mask of Light and use it to become the Toa of Light, the seventh and greatest of the heroes. While I do not know where it is, I can tell you that it is one of many objects you will find as you explore the island. In fact, there are many other sacred masks, or Kanohi, you can uncover; each of them restores your elemental energy and stamina levels.

You can also replenish your stamina by picking up the Amana Volo spheres left behind by defeated enemies — to gain back elemental energy lost when you attack Makuta’s foot soldiers, search the mines scattered around the island for energy spheres, and look aboveground for blast canisters that release elemental energy when opened. In addition, you can draw in the elemental energy that hums through our environment, but you must be standing still to do so. Your shield, which you may summon for brief moments to deflect enemy blasts, also absorbs dark elemental energy and turns it into the light.

Unlock Those Bonuses

You will also find lightstones during your travels. Collect them to unlock special bonuses in Kini Nui, which you can visit during breaks in your adventure. Those bonuses include video recordings of key moments from your journeys, a visitor’s guide that explains more about the island and its inhabitants and other secrets that I will leave you to discover. Don’t worry if you don’t find all of a Wahi’s lightstones — once you have completed it, you can return later to discover the missing ones.
